Griffith Park Fire

Griffith Park Fire, originally uploaded by Twitchietai.

A major fire broke out in Griffith Park this afternoon and is still raging, 8 hours later. Griffith Park is located in Los Angeles, near Hollywood. The Griffith Observatory, LA Zoo, Autry Museum, and the Hollywood sign are all in the park.

When I got home from work today, I hiked up a hill on a college campus near my home. That was about 6 pm and there were several people watching and taking pictures. At that point no flames were visible, but there was a column of white smoke, and it looked like the fire was going to be under control soon.

Then the sun went down and the wind kicked up and we all watched sadly as we saw more and more flair-ups. This is a chronological series of the fire from about 6pm to about 7:30 pm

Although the Los Angeles Zoo and the Griffith Observatory were spared, it is reported that Dante's View and Amir's Garden are now gone

Wow!

It's sad to hear that they haven't evacuated the animals at the zoo, that this fire is in or near so many awesome places, and that it happend at all.

Maybe next time our rain falls are as far behind as they have been this year, people will take heed to clear the brush earlier.

Let's pray that the animals & staff are gotten out of the zoo area and that the observatory and other awesome places to go there in Griffith Park are OK!

I live north of LA and we've had our own fire issues this last year, including smoke inhalation, evacuations, etc. so I know how scary these big fires can be!

Let's pray people who were evacuated got not only themselves and their pets out of there, but also their IDs, as that becomes a real issue when you go through a situation like this, and when it's time to go back home - so if you live in the area, and evacuation is even a possibility, be SURE to get your pets in carriers (or at least on leashes), get your ID, medications, clothes, and other important stuff ready & be ready to go with little to no warning! Get out before you absolutely have to, as fires can be incredibly dangerous and firefighters, police, etc. don't always have time to get everyone out!

ALSO, CHECK ON YOUR ELDERLY AND DISABLED NEIGHBORS!!! Be sure they have whatever they need as well!

God bless and hope no one else gets hurt & no more structures are lost... BEWARE OF SMOKE, as it will get you long before the fire ever does!!! If it's really smoky where you are, get out of there!

They evacuated all visitors to the zoo this afternoon and closed all entrances to the entire park. 100 zoo personal stayed behind to evacuate the animals if necessary. The fire had moved away from the zoo earlier this evening and the animals are no longer in danger.

Good news! Amir's is safe, according to their website. :) Thank the goddess that something was spared!

Yeah! That is good news! I also heard that the Greek Theater, which was originally reported as destroyed, still survives.
